What Does This Tape Sound Like?
This one has a Mountain Goats song on it, so you'll have to fight it out for copies online. Yes, even though the lone mg song was compiled on Abridged Perversion.
On the Wckr Spgt site, there are three versions of "Making Love Will Cure My Sick Heart": one on Who Will Die, one on Live '87-91, and one on Silvergate and Dovetail. This is the same recording as the one on Who Will Die, which the Spgt site places in October 1991.
Sentridoh delivers a nice acoustic song here, and Goosewind comes in right after with some distorted singing vocals and strange noise
Primordial Undermind have a lighter intro here than their usual fare, then go full tilt as usual.
Paste comes in with the Paste you crave - guitar chords just slightly off expectations, plaintive vocals.
Carne-A comes in hard and fast: yells and electric guitar and record scratch. I gotta find out who drummed here, they're really going for it.
Bugskull's entry here is, I think, abbreviated from the first track on their Shrimper tape, Subversives In The Midst (no index page yet)
Nothing Painted Blue's entry here is something. "Sugar lift" is an etching process, used in printmaking to preserve brushstrokes. What does that tell you? I'm not sure.
On the B-side, it's Satnam Puppets with a quick non-music intro of heckling at a show
Refrigerator next, with "Judy Blank" --- this one goes way up into the red. It's great when Allen yells, every time.
Al Larsen follows. I played this for someone once in the car and they accused me of trying to trick them, that this was some lost live Extra Glenns song. It's not, but I can see academically how they'd get there, maybe. Not quite a Glenn D tone to the voice.
Halo comes in right after with guitar feedback before the drum machine lands. "The River Runs Back" was re-recorded as "The River Runs Black" for Halo's 1993 album JAG-eye.velocity rather than for Alloy (1991).
No idea who was in Showboat, Insect Feelings, or Rock and Roll Gromets. "That Damn Thing" is acoustic folksy stuff. "Zisk" is some neat instrumental noise stuff. "The Day The Earth Burned" is a more standard rock song.
Mountain Goats songs are capably covered elsewhere by Nall, the weirdos on the wikia, and whoever else has Annotated tMG pages saved to their hard disk
At least two other recordings of Shoeface covering "Future Shock" exist: one in studio in 1991, and one live on KDVS. This one was recorded at Munchies, according to Abridged Perversion's liner notes.
Lil' Johnny H, John Harrelson, brings his Alabama-born blues to end the comp, "Incomplete #1" referring to the song ending early with some apologies and a cheerful "It's just a gamble." The Treasury of Claremont Music has a nice writeup on Harrelson here.
Some were mentioned above, but the round-up:
Nine (!) songs on this comp were compiled on the comp-of-comps Abridged Perversion:
"Certain Dance - Circumstance" by Sentridoh
"Manny's Mote" by Goosewind
"Future Shock" cover by Shoeface
"Zisk" by Insect Feelings
"The Window Song" by the Mountain Goats
"Delirium Insomnaical" by the Primordial Undermind
"Untitled" by Jim Bishop
"Canker Town" by Carne-A
"Incomplete #1" by Lil' Johnny H.
