Refrigerator - Dangerous (2011) [Shrimper, SHR159, CD]

From the booklet:

'Certainly a strange document that was never intended to be released in its current form, the disc that you have purchased or stolen or borrowed or ignored, started out as a vague set of demos for an electric Refrigerator record. Bassist Daniel Brodo's fall from a ladder at the art gallery that he & his wife run, resulting in two broken wrists & a serious concussion for him, not only meant a 1 yr recovery for Brodo, but also left the recordings on this disc as stillborns. The band had moved on by the time Daniel had made a full recovery, and was itching to record a new batch of short & concise/loud & elec full band songs, (the better of these due out in 12 months). As the band moved away from these songs, including a song written by Franklin Bruno (who appears on 2 songs here) and a couple written by drummer as well as second guitarist Chris Jones, the whole of them took shape as something altogether different.' - Jim Copolla, Summer 2010

Daniel Brodo - bass. Chris Jones - guitar & drums. Allen Callaci - vocals. Dennis Callaci - guitar & vocals. all music & lyrics written by Dennis Callaci except. For Some Dark Song Less Day music written by Chris Jones, lyrics written by Allen Callaci. Backlit Leaves written & performed by Chris Jones. The Man With Isaac's Shadow music & lyrics written by Franklin Bruno. recorded live to one track. layout by Bill Magdziarz. sequencing/splicing by Steve Folta. artwork by Dennis Callaci.

I don't have a ton to say about this one, the above covers things pretty well. Notable for having a Chris Jones solo instrumental track (one is reminded of instrumental guitar duet "Jive Jive" from the self-titled) and a track penned by Franklin Bruno. Use the usual buttons above to see store pages for Grapefruit and Revolver, to pick up a copy. (As of the time of writing, June 18th 2022, you can still get this one as an mp3 download at Revolver, if you've fallen into the vortex of modernity and no longer have a CD player, or a computer with an optical drive, or a car stereo in the Goldilocks zone between tape-deck and aux-only, or one of those USB external drives, or a disc based gaming system that reads CDs, or a DVD player, somebody told me even those Blu-Ray players can play CDs. Are you only down to streaming? I hope not.) Anyway. I wonder a lot what this one would have sounded like if the songs made it to full-band electric recordings, and I admit to listening to this one less often than other Refrigerator releases, but I have a soft spot for it. That the band refused to just borrow a bassist for electric studio recordings at the time, holding out for Brodo even if the spark for these songs dimmed in the meantime, is some pretty sweet stuff. This album stands as a monument to love of one's bassist! A testament to the purity of being loyal to your bassist! The bassist is the rock upon wh okay, okay, okay. On we go.

Lyrics straight from the liner notes:

01. Be Positive
if your book strings gets misplayed
i will bend it back into key
spend the free time that i found somewhere
on a cure or something
something like waitresses holding on
until the end of summer
when all the change that's left for them
will mean vacation or a slumber
if your book of dreams gets lost and found
in the town that you departed
by a two cent tin roof clown
who deems it childish
i will track him down
and explain in grave detail
the significance of each letter
and the reasons that you left here
hey, be positive
see, this isn't over
if you lose your way around
your dreams get lost in a slumber
you cant find your way back into town
you can always look up my number

02. The Worthless Rearview
call in a replacement
have them well equipped
to deal with wrecks
as soon as you can
if it can't be done bring along a friend
cuz you'll need a hand
some kind of helping hand
i got the radio off, the windows tight lipped
to keep the heat in
the heat of all we said
the poisoned interior, the worthless rearview
who needs that, who could want that
you'lll have to call your brother in law
he's good with insurance
i'm sure he'll be good with this
sell the car today before the pink slip turns black
i want it towed away if you can in a dash
come take this coffin away
i'll throw in some gas, i'll throw in some gas
and a match

03. Amaze Me
amaze me
with the weight from your shoulders bowing
remove these
thorns of gristle that mean absolutely nothing to me
the torch you came here carrying
only managed to scare the city folk
the grudge you came here baring
as though it were some kind of trophy
first place in idiocy, bronze in defeat
turn your grievances into kindling
your kindling into heat
remove the burn, cast away deceit
a song on the radio about a ghost i use to know
that claims he was me
there's a song on the radio by a ghost
who claims that he knew you before me
spinning the chandelier into a hurricane
and i say eye, come and face me

04. For Some Dark Song Less Day
if you'll be my navigator i will be your wheels
do you know the way to something real
because mountains hit the ground
empires fall down
but true love sticks around
if you'll bring the birds to sing
i'll write down the words
place them in a far safe place
for some dark songless day
meet me at the interstate
that goes & goes & goes
and goes

05. Cold Comfort
they take some kind of cold comfort there
they take some kind of cold comfort
they talk about you
how fucked up that you were
they take some kind of cold comfort and then
they dress up the myths, they dress up the myths
fly them overhead overhead
the gravestone of marble, the kids in the back row
they want it to be seen and felt
wrap it around a useless body
give it some big words
give it some room to move around now
to another herd
you're chapter 11, stumbling 12 step programs
you're 1234 let's go
excusing the heartaches
dressing the mistakes as outtakes
for those in the know
this deserves no reverie
this deserves not a thing

06. Knee Play
you would do best to disregard this
and all that it brings along
i swept the snow from the breeze
so it wouldn't get in your eyes
though i knew you'd never see it
the minor things i do
that are more than lost on you
they should have been lost
well they should have been
even these man made things
they'd be ashamed
a crossword question not worth mentioning
sticking its foot in the door to get its say
its grease squeaking that its wheels dont work
as it rolls away
you should have left before the fire drill made you stay
trapped in a world of indecision
that pointed your way, so far away
of all the promises i ever made
the most difficult ones are now turning teenaged
juvenile acts embarrassed as they decay
stuck looking for love in the shadows of the depraved
its a knee play
that fails in every way

07. Lonely & Desperate & Gutless & Blind
bring with you the company you so desire
to clothe and to comfort, to cushion and imply
that loneliness has been defeated by you
that sorrow is long out of your sight
bring along belonging bought to hide
the shadows that abound behind you
how they finally became strands of your DNA
subsisting on a barely breathing thing
bring it all back for me to see
and it will mean as much to you
as you then meant to me
when i was lonely and desperate and gutless and blind

08. The Man With Isaac's Shadow
a suitable suit for a funeral
hanging in the back of the closet
good solder, dark soldier
called to duty once a year
from a forest of branches and roots
they rolled up isaac's shadow
bore it away under one arm
good soldier, dark solder
as if it weighed nothing,
hanging like a funeral suit
all the clothes arranged by rank
your tears will water the earth
and salt is nothing but sweat
even the damned get a sort of reward
they know what to expect
a suitable suit for a funeral
good solder, dark soldier

08. Quarter Dumpster Spin
if you're wondering why you're still alive
mouth full of your pillow late into the night
seeking something that's divine
there is something troublesome you'll need to know
i don't want to be the one to tell you so
you see i was there jimmy
when they fed their version of chemical dreams into your iv
in a white coat whispering that you was diseased
mastitizing deceit with their solutions of water saline
weightless and see through we'll have to wait and see
most people think these weightless and see through
invisible things well
they won't hurt me
now at the laundromat resigned to a quarter dumpster spin
she tells me she would really like to be with you again
put aside the fact that you once were friends
and that's all you are again
put aside all you burned through and wasted then
she knows i know you're dead
from that point forward nothing further gets said
she's slipping her headphones on
in her headphones she sings along, she sang
lover lover, lover lover, lover lover, lover come back to me
lover lover, lover lover, lover lover, lover come back to me
if you're wondering how youre still alive
after you burned all your love to the ground
after even your stronger organs shut down
there's something you'll need to know
what did they do with all of your might
what did you do then in broad daylight
there's no key then to undo
there's no deeper depth for which you can fall into
with your backpack on, with your backpack on you sink
the blame within it resting squarely
if you're wondering why
look no further than might

10. Undue Tragedy II
i would take whatever they would offer to undue
the tragedies that will certainly befall you
you too young to digest death
you overcome with phones that hum
hum subways home that hum them to death
a soldier's songs whose lines are lost, lost on you
well don't feel so bad, they're lost on me too
all i do is fight for the moments before me
cut them off and send them down to sea
see you know nothing too
you see, you know it all, you know nothing too
you'd be better off to take from them their first offer
because the third one it will be worse
they'll take from you more than your worth
and how can you repay them then
and how can you get that back

11. Backlit Leaves
inst

12. The Dangers That You Are
you pawned your gold plated watch
did without cigarettes, took hold of a sickness
as opposed to a threat
when your family asked how come
your reply was how come is a stretch
does a saint ever tire of torture
or a sinner from silences
pawned your gold for a heart
did without so we could starve
i would just as soon hold onto a stranger
than the dangers that you are
and when they ask how come,
well how come, thats a stretch
do you ever tire of the torture
or of the silences
or of the silences
