What Does This Tape Sound Like?
|
Refrigerator lyrics by ear are always slightly challenging. I've listened to this tape over a hundred times, I'm sure, and I still have some best-guesses under the tape hiss. For example, "Albert Caboose" fuzzes out hard at the end---"it was only..." then what's that? "...a dream?" "...early?"---but if you crank up "Caboose" on Car Alarm, you can make out the consonant sound---"...a movie".
A1. Lonesome Surprise
doctor, doctor
can you help me please
all these pills and problems
keep piling down on me
here's your lonesome surprise
(here's your) lonesome surprise
i had a name
i had a place
but like the clothes i wear
the holes grow everywhere
til it's like having nothing at all
i walked out of my shower
feeling more wet than baptized
A2. North Caroliner
north carolina
just another place
i've got pinned up on my wall
north carolina
i've never been at all
seeing the world through a windshield...
got a patch of asphalt i keep in my back pocket
it's not my fault
A3. Bicycle Chain
(guitar noise)
A4. Bubblegum & Beer
you are miles from here
you are even farther
from whatever it is i'm thinkin
[inaudible]
you're left with after a long day
you are miles from here
you are even further
from whatever it is i'm thinkin
whatever it is i'm thinkin
why don't we just sit around some more?
A5. Fun
can i take you for a ride
can i hide you for a while
am i just another guy
blinded by your light?
fun
A6. Freeway
my love, busy as a freeway
makes herself all pretty
it all passes by
says "i love you" sometimes
bad soul, good provider
she says down onto me
you walk around with that chip on your shoulder
an itch in your hand
and i crawl back in my bed
do what you have to
A7. Alligator Skinmace
(web admin note: help)
[inaudible]
go on down,
i got the whole city
right under my shoes
nothin' doin
nothing to lose
what's wrong with now
[inaudible]
why should you worry
just leave it to them
some things just can't fit
inside a microwave
some days
you're just meant to...
hey pretty lady,
i got the whole city
right under my shoes
A8. Cardboard Trucks
(web admin note: help)
pull your head out of your [inaudible] that pretty of a picture
told you not to throw it all away but you wouldn't listen
some of the things you hang from your ceiling i can't understand
it wasn't that pretty of a picture
maybe it was best to [inaudible]
that's how i think now
maybe
[inaudible]
saying [inaudible]
if i said it once well i'll say it again
it's been gone over a little too hard
cracked and crushed by cardboard trucks
isn't it [inaudible]
B1. Run Along
(web admin note: help)
there may come a day
you and i can say
we reached out to one another
i finally changed the way you
said i never would
crawled out from beneath all
i was living from
put on a fresh shirt
took a flying leap
running along
well the change came
in my sleep
never realized it
so much later [inaudible]
we didn't talk about it
did we ever
yeah and all the things we had
that we shared together
well i have the beer if you
find the time
and if you'd take a look, well
maybe you won't be looking back
B2. Scabby Hat
(web admin note: help)
[inaudible]
we're running out of air
running out of things to do
[inaudible]
B3. F Word
f-word
[yelling]
call
call me, call me,
you don't call me anything but the f-word
B4. Class of Next Year
(web admin note: help)
here's to the class of next year
you who'll inherit our sins, our fears
the class of next year
here's to the girl who would've had it all
if it wouldn't have been for one dumb rabbit
and to a man who'll probably end up a gas station attendant
gas station attendant
you in the back now, don't think we forgot you
struggle through the [inaudible] looking for somebody to talk to
and all you'll go to college
get your heads on
all you future leaders
all the poors you'll step on
if you're the ones who [inaudible]
sell real estate [inaudible]
a boring job
i'm gonna miss you
god i'm gonna miss you
B5. Problems In The Oven (Job Hunting)
(web admin note: help)
look down all at once
myself around
problems in the oven
and i'm always out of money
tell you tell you i've been trying
but the fish they just ain't biting
where i am
did you ever wonder
your [inaudible] your worth
on the planet earth
B6. Albert Caboose
there's a theater seat
waiting for me
a little bit downtown
and a part that's been written
especially for me
this cast of crazies
dialogue wanders on
this time she is leaving
a train arrives
scenery changes
all we have on a luggage rack
the camera pans to a deserted railway station
there i am, cryin in my hands, saying over and over
it was only
a movie
B7. Does She?
does she, does she, does she
have other places to be
does she, does she
ever mention me
does she
tell her i've grown
B8. Annie Christian
(Prince cover. Sort of.)
