Nothing Painted Blue - Control Freak (1996) [Scat Records, scat43, 7"]

Tracklist:

A - Control Freak
B - Niacin

The 1997 Nothing Painted Blue compilation Emotional Discipline compiled much of the band's 7" output, but not this one. You'll have to pick up the 7" yourself to hear the whole thing, but enjoy the clip below!

"Niacin" appears first here in this 1995 recording, and would be re-recorded in the next two years for inclusion on The Monte Carlo Method. You can hear Franklin using the original lyric here ("narrow me down") which he mentions in the liner notes for The Monte Carlo Method. Listen here for comparison, and then check out the later re-recording

What Does This 7" Sound Like?

From the sleeve:

brodie, bruno, hughes; durkee 1995; fireproof press

Add one to Bob Durkee's running tally of credits.

Also: both sides say "45" on this one, but you have to play the A-side at 33&1/3. The B-side runs at 45 as stated. When I first went to rip this one, on autopilot following the labels, I came out with a helium-sounding Franklin singing a bouncy-tempo "Control Freak". A 90's Spgt cover of the song at this speed would have been great. Bonus tracks in the Everybody's Dead (Oh No) of some other universe.

As of December 2022, welcome aboard: this is what you hear if you're, say, trying to feed several 7"s into your computer one after another on a busy afternoon, and happen to put your headphones on to spot-check what's in the monitor mid-way through, having followed the speed printed on the record...

Make sure to change the speed when you flip:
