DiskothiQ - Sad Truths (1997) [Unreleased Demos, Online Download]

From Peter's blog Fivetools, where he released the album online:

The great shame of DiskothiQ is that we never finished this record. It would have been the best one. I honestly can't remember why we didn't; lack of funds, lack of wherewithal, lack of focus, lack of sense. I've got a tape of the basics somewhere, and I have these recordings, from a performance on KUCI some time in 1997. Unfortunately this was before we'd worked up what would've been the closing track and optimistic counterpoint to the rest of the album, a song called "Glad Truths," but its optimism proved misguided anyway. A-to-D'd from a crummy old cassette, so apologies for the crap sound quality.

Peter saying this would have been the best one is interesting. Maybe that's true about what these live KUCI demos might have become, maybe not. I like to mention what would go on a DiskothiQ best-of compilation, and my entry from this one is, direct Bandcamp link here: "Linköping Syndrome".

01. Youth Isn't Wasted On The Young

well there's a new club
down on 2nd street
it's a new
place to go for me and for you
and they kicked it all off
with three whole days of certainty
and the host just turned 10 when i was 23

and all at once
oh it's so clear to see
youth is not wasted on the young
no, no
but it was wasted
on me

well i had no luck with promiscuity
and i had no patience for dreams
so i sat in my room
and i talked to myself
until i ran out of blank tapes and batteries

and now the time has come
and it's so clear to see
youth is not wasted on the young
no, no
but it was wasted
on me
on me
on me
on me
on me
on me

02. Dizzy

I feel
dizzy

i turned 26 today
no longer a kid today
i think i'm gonna be sick
so this is livin'

terry's wrapped up the freaking show
they kicked it off ten minutes ago
you've seen the odds now take your pick
like a general

you cast your world in terms of sports metaphors
you've run 3000 yards but you still haven't scored
you're not exactly a rookie
no no
no not by a long shot
but long shots
are all you've got

just this
weekend

i realized i've fallen behind the curve
i gotta wonder do folks get what they deserve
or just what they expected?

i was
hoping

that maybe somehow only the good parts count
maybe the failures would get marked down
i guess i should have checked it

03. An Exceedingly Fragile Thing

well it's an unfortunate fact of life
the briefest lapse of judgment could cost you your life
it's an exceedingly fragile thing
your life
well it's an exceedingly fragile thing

and now you're tracing
instead of chasing
every road you ever walked
and so you wander
with time to ponder
every chance you took

well all it takes is an instant
and everything you've worked for goes right down the drain
you won't be keeping the appointments you made
no no no
it's an exceedingly fragile thing

and now it's shifted
and kinda drifted
over continents and seas
and so you're wishin'
that your position
could be seen

you could be in this room
and we'd never know it
if you were in this room
would you want us to

would it please you to know
life goes on without you
your friends all talk
as if right through you
right through you now

well it's an unfortunate fact of life
the briefest lapse of judgment could cost you your life
it's an exceedingly fragile thing
your life
well it's an exceedingly fragile thing

and now you're missin'
what you were kissin'
you'd have it back at any cost
but now you're hopin'
you don't bother hopin'
yeah cause everything is lost
oh it's all gone now
oh, it's all gone now
oh, it's all gone now

04. Airport '97

the person sitting next to me
says "are we gonna crash?"
well
it certainly looks that way
she said, "i don't wanna die"
that doesn't make much difference now
there's not much to be done
to try to save your life
your life or anyone's

it's too late now
it's too late now
it's too late now

all the way down
she second guessed herself
this didn't quite jive with the notion
of free will she'd so long held

and all that stuff that she believed
well it all came back to her
all the planes that ever crashed
well it all came back to her

it's too late now
it's too late now
it's too late now

a 400 mile per hour breeze
rips through the fuselage
and those silly yellow plastic cups
well they weren't much use to us
and the horror of the realization that
she never once was in control was
just about the worst damn thing
the worst damn thing she'd ever known

it's too late now
it's too late now
it's too late now

05. Highway 71 Revisited

this song also appears on Grow Up, Move Out, a 2011 comp by Fayettenam records. Click here to go to the bandcamp page where you can get ahold of the sotto voce synth pop version peter did in his Fangio period.

well of course you can't go home again
you just won't recognize it
and you can visit all your friends
and they might remember you
but the cornfields where you used to walk
have all been subdivided
and everything' paved over now
and everything is new

oh the architecture all has changed
the streets they've all been rearranged
but you're right
from here the freeway's beautiful

why not swing by the old high school
and try to find your locker
but the lockers are all gone now too
and for that you can blame the kids
now don lowell's [sp?] a millionaire
and don lugo's a pauper
and for some reason they're both still here
maybe just to rub it in

oh the architecture all has changed
the streets have all been rearranged
but you're right
from here the freeway's beautiful

the expectations all have changed
you're off the hook for yesterday
hey look
from here the freeway's beautiful

06. Freedom '97

white, that's the color of the sky
from june straight on through to july
and here summer takes its toll
on things that live that just don't know

a breeze blows in from time to time
and it's hot and it's dark---i mean, soft
and it takes the edge off all this wine
and all we need to do is take these lies
and make them true

the plants they wither where they sit
the hose it cracked and then it split
our home it simmers and it bakes
and the birds well they shut up and they wait

last night you didn't make a sound
and the moon it cast a shadow
from where you sit down to the ground
and all we need to do is take these lies
and make them true

07. Linköping Syndrome

i don't understand the language
but the symbols all make sense
and now you're filling me with something
slightly more than meaningless
and the part of me i trusted
is now picking up the scent
and you're circling like an airplane
prepared for your descent

how can i stay
what can i say
to make this all come true
and make it go away
how can i tell when i know that it would break the spell
that's all we really wanted
please don't look at me that way

and now you're whispering in circles
and you're whispering in red
and while i sure do like that color
i wish you'd sing to me instead
cause there's music in the ether
and if you listen close you'll hear
the longest night i'll ever live
is in vain[?] to disappear

how can i stay
what can i say
to make this all come true
and make it go away
how can i tell when i know that it would break the spell
that's all we really wanted
please don't look at me that way
please don't look at me that way
please don't look at me that way
please don't look at me that way

08. Coolio Uber Alles

in a city
as old as time
that time has forgotten
you walk upon the stones
unaware
that history exists
and memory is a gift
to be feared

and on this road you'll need a compass
two pairs of socks to keep you warm
and when you get--oh, sorry! and in your back pocket
you keep the day when you were born

in a moment
like any other
something went wrong
and god in heaven
he took away
looked, turned, took
and now memory is nice
but there's a greater price
to be paid

and on this road there's lots of coffee
plenty of cheese, plenty of bread
and when you get to where you're going
everything you love
it will be dead

09. Sad Truths

and somehow they've convinced you
you're the schlitz
you just turned 17 now it's your turn
you know just what you want
and you'll get it
but there's a few more things
that you have yet to learn

because!
sad truths they're waiting for you
sad truths they're waiting for you
sad truths they're waiting for you
sad truths

and so you think that your success
will be based in merit
your natural gifts and hard work
must pay off
well if that's what you really think
you can forget it
cause if there's just one thing that i know
it's that you're wrong

sad truths they're waiting for you
sad truths they're waiting for you
sad truths they're waiting for you
sad truths

sad truths they're waiting for you
sad truths they're waiting for you
sad truths they're waiting for you
sad truths
