Refrigerator/Nothing Painted Blue Split (1995) [Misha Records, MISHA-02, 7"]

Before I get into this one, an urgent request: if anyone knows how to get in touch with Chuck and/or Kris who worked on this release, I really appreciate the work they did on the interviews attached to this 7", and I don't want to have the scans/transcripts up indefinitely without some way to 1) link to whatever these folks are doing now, or 2) get their A-OK about it. Please email if you have any info, thanks very much! :-)

Tracklist:

A - Nothing Painted Blue - "Anti-Nomination"

B1 - Refrigerator - "Signal"
B2 - Refrigerator - "Adoby and Jim"
B3 - Refrigerator - "Spooky"

What Does The Refrigerator Side of the 7" Sound Like?

This is a cool split. It could only be cooler if it were one of those splits where the artists cover each other's songs, but it's halfway there, I'll take it. Nothing Painted Blue cover "Anti-Nomination", a Refrigerator song. If you want to hear Nothing Painted Blue's cover but can't find this 7", you can hear it on the 1997 Nothing Painted Blue compilation Emotional Discipline. Notes on this recording from those liner notes:

Anti-Nomination
(Refrigerator) © 1992 Inland
Music (BMI)
rec March 1994/mixed 1995 in Brent-
wood & Burbank CA by Marty Brum-
bach on 24 tracks

KYLE: Our tribute to the mighty
Refrigerator. Recorded during
the Placeholders sessions, just
before tearing down the gear.

FRANKLIN: The original (almost inaudi-
ble) recording of this song,
written after the death of a
friend of the Callaci brothers,
was the only song that didn't
seem like an insult to my grand-
father's memory to have on in
my car in the days after his pass-
ing in 1993.

KYLE: On another point, I'd like to
lift a glass to Dennis Callaci.
When I was in high school, my
dad suggested that I investigate
the local music scene. Until Den-
nis brought things together with
Shrimper, there really wasn't
much worth investigating.

For a higher-fi version of "Anti-Nomination" by Refrigerator, see the Somehow EP. The "almost inaudible" older recording, sourced to 1992, is very likely the version on Refrigerator's 1992 7" Music For Hi-Fi Bugs/Songs With A Story. There's also a live recording of Refrigerator singing "Anti-Nomination" on the Live Like Linda McCartny tape, recorded in 1994, where like the other tracks it's listed under a fake name from the lyrics (in this case, "Violets R Blue")

On the B-Side, there are three songs by Refrigerator that haven't turned up anywhere else, to my knowledge. According to the interview with Dennis Callaci, some notes:

CHUCK ARNOLD, MISHA RECORDS: Who is Chris that plays drums on "Spooky"?

DENNIS: He's on a lot of the records too.

CHUCK: Peter plays guitar on "Spooky" and Bob Durkee, from Shoeface (and producer
of Franklin's new solo record) plays on here as well.

So, based on "Anti-Nomination" coming from the Placeholders sessions and these notes about the Refrigerator tracks, personnel for this record:

Nothing Painted Blue - "Anti-Nomination"
Vocals: Franklin Bruno
Bass: Peter Hughes
Drums: Kyle Brodie

Refrigerator - "Signal"
Vocals: Allen Callaci
Drums & guitar: ?

Refrigerator - "Adoby and Jim"
Vocals: Allen Callaci
Drums & guitar: ?

"Spooky"
Vocals: Allen Callaci & Dennis Callaci
Guitar: Peter Hughes
Drums: Chris Jones
Playing something: Bob Durkee

An interesting note on "Spooky": the lyric that sounds like "face down and start to slide/all the steps you stole" returns in "Ageing Paint" on 1995 Refrigerator album Bicycle.
