Nothing Painted Blue - The Bellyspeak EP (1990) [Jupa Records, JUPA-002, 7"]

Tracklist:

A1 - K For Karnival
A2 - Let's Kiss

B - Foundation Slips

These three songs made it to the 1997 Nothing Painted Blue compilation Emotional Discipline, where the band offered their retrospective:

K for Karnival:

FRANKLIN: Peter Margasak wrote that this
song was tantamount to "publicly
sucking Calvin Johnson's as."

KYLE: We actually asked Calvin if he
wanted to release it. He politely
declined.

FRANKLIN: Yes, it was about the label, which
was important to me at the time,
but it was also about a girl, a letter,
and a phoneme.

MICHAEL: I am very proud of the fact that
on this single I played these songs
with my fingers, no picks.

Let's Kiss:

FRANKLIN: I knew there was a compilation
on K called "Let's Kiss," but not that
there was a Beat Happening song
of that name; I probably wouldn't
have written this if I had. Speedy.

KYLE: Our first and last attempt at
sampling, from a verntriloquism in-
structional record.

Foundation Slips:

(rarity: Neelon/OPB for the writing credit instead of Bruno/OPB)

MICHAEL: I was shooting for Anton von
Webern as played by Jelly Roll
Morton on the Chinese "erhu."
Instead it came out like the progres-
sion to "Boys Don't Cry."

FRANKLIN: I fooled with the lyrics and added
the key changes at the end, but this
is mostly Mike's work. He also plays
a bit of Malcolm Rossish guitar in
the choruses. Five times more com-
plicated than anything we'd tried
before, recorded in an out-of-the-
phone-book Fontana studio by an
engineer specializing in contempo-
rary Christian. The rhythm of the
guitar opening and general feel
have been swiped by Dog's Eye View
on their wretched Modern Rock hit
"Everything Falls Apart."
