A breakdown of the tracklist:
- One non-music track is particularly of note: A16, Bill Chen - "At Random (Promo)" - This is a recording of KSPC DJ Bill Chen (see also: the Baby Huey label) talking about his show At Random, mentioning what sounds like Tom Skelly and, all the while, queueing up the Exit House song "Exit Blues" which is presumably why it got recorded here. Allen Callaci has also mentioned in an interview that while he and Dennis Callaci had little success getting other local DJs to play their pre-Refrigerator band The Bux on air, Bill Chen was more amenable.
- This compilation features 12 Exit House recordings, three of which are less than a minute long.
- "Ode to '73 (Excerpt)" is in two clips: 25 seconds and 44 seconds, which is the boys playing some drum/guitar riffs with breaks for little vocal quips. ("We don't have Coke, would you like Pepsi?" "Far out, man." to raucous laughter from the others.)
- "Elvis Encounter" clocks in at 6 minutes and 8 seconds of Wckr Spgt-esque weirdness. It's like if The Livin' B'Jesus had 80's Joel Huschle vocals. I think Peter should put it on Bandcamp.
- "Drivin'" is acoustic guitar with some low-pitched vocals. "Overdrive is my friend..."
- "Argument" sounds like Marty Davis trying to be the guy we all have to be in a group setting sometimes. Man,
- "Gargantuan" is harmonica/guitar that brings "Self-Help" from Super-Leggera to mind. There's some giggling, and a mention of Juan Manuel Fangio.
- "Armageddon" is a fuzzier recording with some lively drums and, surprisingly, a few layers of different tones and sounds.
- "Bob's Power" has some attempted harmonies and some more giggling.
- "So. California Geography Lesson" is a great song about hating not only your hometown, but the general proximity. "Fuck my house and fuck yours and fuck Hollywood, fuck Hollywood, fuck everything and more..." At one point we arrive at "fuck the sky" which is really as pure as teenage feeling gets.
- "Mr. Bungle" could be making references I can't parse. The title probably arises from somewhere in this chain: an educational video for children on manners where children are advised not to do what "Mr. Bungle" would do; Pee Wee Herman featuring that video in '83; or, the band from Eureka taking its name from the aforementioned.
- "Peter Claremont Son Of Sky" takes the melody of "Angels We Have Heard On High" and then goes off the rails. There's some goofing off and cursing.
- "Love Will Tear Us Apart" starts with some banter and gradually shifts to the boys attempting part of a Joy Division cover.
- There are five Party of One recordings:
- "Circus Song" brings in the Casio program beats. An instrumental.
- "Mike's A Dick" is, from personal correspondence with Mr. Party of One, a perfectly nice guy from class who could be counted on for back-and-forth roasting during class. "Mike is a dick, I'm sure I won't see him on the senior field trip...."
- "Milk" has the quick Casio beat and some low piano notes. A simple plotline for a song: "I just ran 30 blocks, I'm as thirsty as thirsty gets... I'll have some milk!"
- "They Took Away My Radio" is some great loud feedback noise and the spoken title. Good noise sensibilities here.
- "Pain Anguish Death and Destruction" is nearly 3 minutes long. Much closer in vocal tone to the later stuff, not much different from the kind of thing that's on Super-Leggera
- Rob Garlt & Peter H:
- "Blue Monday" is of course an abbreviated New Order cover. In the earliest days of Diskothi-Q, Rob was the band's second guitarist. This and the Exit House stab at "Love Will Tear Us Apart" above show more discipline than many of the other recordings presented here. It is, in my opinion, very sweet.
- "Desert Island Instrumental" is some dual-guitar stuff, chords beneath and a melody being played. I must apologize and say that I don't recognize it.
- Other recordings (music/music excerpts):
- Brian Latta - Gaby Song
- Donner Party - Donner Party Theme (A Tragic Feast)
- Chino Youth - How Will I Know
- Unity Coherence And Logic - Machine Song
- Donner Party - Truck Driver
- J.A. Goufrey - Untitled
- Unity Coherence And Logic - Unity Coherence and Logic Theme
- Hardy Boyz - Imagine
- Other recordings (radio, non-music, field recordings):
- Mark Mojdehi - Untitled - A reading (very brief)
- The Earthquake Is Coming! - Untitled - Recordings of various news stories about seismic predictions.
- King Punk - Untitled - KSPC host reading off the winner of a radio competition for tickets to an animation festival. (The contest question was to identify a band playing, with "two answers": Sonic Youth and Ciccone Youth, Ciccone Youth being the SY side project with Mike Watt of the Minutemen)
- Boom, It Happened - Untitled - Recordings of people, probably from radio interviews, reacting to the Challenger disaster.
- Mike McGinniss - Untitled - A few words here.
- Kristal Dooley - Untitled - Unknown provenance. Classmates?
