Some notes:
- Shoeface has a "Shoeface Theme" much like Diskothi-Q had a "Diskothi-Q Theme" which appears only as a live recording on the Hot August Night tape.
- KDVS is the station for UC Davis, and has broadcast on 90.3FM since 1977.
- "Lust to Love" is a Go-Go's cover, sounds like bassist Nathan Wilson on lead vocals and Bob joining in on the chorus. This same vocal setup (same '94 session, even) continues into "Benign", which also has a writing credit for Nathan.
- "Who Owns Your Soul" on the A-side has a cute little spoken intro of "we're Shoeface, hopefully we run into you again sometime." Cue guitar/drum barrage and Bob's signature hollering.
- "Some Things Never Change" is originally by The Dils (Kinman/Kinman here being brothers Chip and Tony Kinman).
- "Gut Feeling/Slap your Mammy" is a Devo cover, from their first album, 'Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!'. The Mothersbaugh/Casale credit here is, specifically, Mark & Bob Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, not to be confused with Jim Mothersbaugh or Bob Casale. Bob's little "got a guuuut FEELIN" yells are top notch.
- The spoken intro to "Good Samaritan" is Bob saying: "Y'know the other night Dennis said to me, I'm really glad you don't play 'Good Samaritan' anymore..."
- The final track on the B-side is labeled here as "Theme from Reality Bites", attributed to Fieger/Averre. This is a great little trick, and left me (admittedly not up on my rock surnames or the comedy films of 1994) clueless until I did a little poking around. Vocals by Allen Callaci! And yes, Bob is there on the "whoo!"'s. The first time I listened to this, I was so happy, I felt like I needed to go run a lap up and down the street. What a sign-off for Shoeface.
In some correspondence about this tape, Bob had this to say:
"I made the Anxiety Closet tape the month before we were playing our last gigs. I went through my archives and picked out all the best versions of just about everything we recorded over the years that had never been officially released. I made less than a hundred copies, sold a few of them but mostly gave them away to our friends."
