Zeni Geva - Honowoh / Sweetheart / Bloodsex (1992) [Baby Huey, BABY-002, 7"]

What Does This 7" Sound Like?

Zeni Geva is a noise rock outfit from Japan, known for being a favorite of Steve Albini and for their Merzbow collaborations.

Descriptions of this release from available catalog inserts:

[Insert from BABY 005]
"Monolithic, guttural grind from a Japanese trio led by guitar wizard K.K. Null.
Their first US release."

Track listing:

A1 - Honowoh
A2 - Sweetheart

B1 - Bloodsex

Zeni Geva's consistent member since founding, KK Null (Kishino Kazuyuki; 岸野 一之, for your searching needs) is credited as just NULL  on vocals here. This 7" comes after founding member and drummer Tatsuya Yoshida (吉田達也 Yoshida Tatsuya) departed the band for other projects, though he rejoined in 2009. On 2nd guitar for this release is MARA, Mitsuru Tabata (田畑満 Tabata Mitsuru) and on drums is Yasuko (not much information, which if you follow various subcultures of Japanese music is par for the course).

For the curious: a 1993 split LP on Netherlands-based label Supreme Tool Supplies featured locals Lewd on the A-side and Zeni Geva on the B-side. The track listing for the Zeni Geva side is "I Want You", "Bloodsex", "Honowoh", and "Sweetheart". Judging by a YouTube video upload of the split and some available photos of the LP sleeve, those are live recordings of the songs, and distinct from the versions on this 7". Can't confirm if the songs from this session made it to another release.

Add'tl note: "Honowoh" is a romanization of the reading of the kanji 炎 as ほのお (hono'o) meaning "flame" or "blaze". You can hear the track, with the title given as 炎 on this release on Bandcamp.

Just because I like geography: their mailing address on the 7" is in Zama, near the northern middle of Kanagawa Prefecture, putting them about 90 minutes of transit-time from the greater Tokyo area.
